Pharmacological pain management involves the use of medications to alleviate pain, improve function, and enhance quality of life. Low back pain, joint pain, neuropathic pain, abdominal pain, and pelvic pain are commonly encountered conditions in primary care. Treatment selection depends on pain type, severity, and underlying conditions. Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) and Acetaminophen are commonly used for mild to moderate pain, while opioids are reserved for severe or refractory cases due to their risk of dependence. Adjuvant medications, including antidepressants and anticonvulsants, are particularly effective for neuropathic pain. Topical agents, such as Lidocaine and Capsaicin, provide localised relief with fewer systemic effects. Muscle relaxants may help in musculoskeletal pain but require caution. A multimodal approach, combining pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapies, is often recommended for optimal pain control and reduced side effects. Learning Objectives: • Implement evidence-based management strategies for low back pain • Diagnose and treat joint pain and neuropathic pain conditions • Utilise multidisciplinary techniques for abdominal and pelvic pain • Analyse real-world case studies to enhance patient care
