Drivers of CKD and CVD Progression in Diabetes

Diabetes accelerates both renal and cardiovascular disease through interacting metabolic, hemodynamic, inflammatory, and vascular pathways. Persistent hyperglycemia promotes oxidative stress, endothelial dysfunction, advanced glycation, and microvascular injury, while hypertension, albuminuria, dyslipidemia, obesity, and insulin resistance further contribute to disease progression. In CKD, declining kidney function and persistent albuminuria are associated with increasing cardiovascular risk, creating a bidirectional relationship between renal and cardiovascular damage. This session will explore the major drivers of CKD and CVD progression in diabetes, with emphasis on modifiable risk factors, early risk identification, and strategies to slow renal decline and reduce cardiovascular complications through comprehensive, cardiorenal-focused management.
